[col. writ. 7/7/14] © ’14 Mumia Abu-Jamal The scenes are, unfortunately, all too familiar.   A person is beaten, ruthlessly, relentlessly, by a cop (or group of cops).   A video is released, and, at least initially, public sympathy flows to the beaten figure on the bottom.   Before long, however, the counter-narrative emerges, the beaten was belligerent, combative, resisted arrest -or, worst o...

[col. writ. 7/9/14] © ’14 Mumia Abu-Jamal   The biblical tale of David vs. Goliath is the quintessential story of how the weak can prevail over the mighty.   It gives people hope that perhaps they can prevail over terrible adversity.   In the Middle East that tale continues to be told, but from the somewhat peculiar perspective that Israel, the Zionist State, is David.   This is how most America...

We Who Like It Hot Call It ‘Black August’ By ‘bro. zayid’ It is the month when our oppressors have nothing to celebrate. It is the month where the nature of our oppression and the boldest expressions of our resistance to that oppression have been made most plain. Black/Afrikan People Must Fight Against the Death Penalty!by Sis. Marpessa Kupendua - 1/2012       “Had it not been for slavery, the death penalty would have likely been abolished in America. Slavery became a haven for the death penalty. In Virginia, before the end of slavery, there was only one crime for which a white person could be executed. But there were 66 crimes for which a slave coul...

Mummers and "Ebonics" by Jah Free I(www.dreadtimes.com)         Every New Year's Eve when I buy the Philadelphia Daily News, I immediately throw away the special wrap-around section on the Mummers. I join the legions of Black and Brown folks in the city who avoid everything associated with Philadelphia's Mummers Day Parade, religiously held every New Year's Day. In case you didn't know, every...
